if you buy a car registered in Ireland, how is the insurance affected?

I rang my insurance people and they said if it was N. Ireland - there was no problem, but if S Ireland then we would have to re - register it as it was classed as a foreign car. I think the car was originally friom the N, but wondered if any one hasd encountered any probs after buying an irish reg car in the UK?
