If you are in a falling elevator, will you die if you jump up right as it hits

the ground? Is there a way to survive a falling elevator crash by jumping up at a certain time? I know Newtons Law but it seems as if you would at least be in freefall right or am I that stupid?
 
THANKS TO THE MAN WHO PATENTED THE SYSTEM OF LOCKS TO KEEP AN ELEVATOR FROM FALLING IF THE CABLES BREAK YOU SHOULD NEVER HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THAT
