If you are a new harley-davidson owner do you take it in for the 1000 mile

I've taken all of the bikes I bought new (Kawi, Honda, Harley) in for the first service. Call around to the dealers or any reputable motorcycle shop to get a price on the break in service.

That is entirely up to you. At the first service they are gonna adjust the cables, adjust the chain/belt drive. change the oil and filter and maybe go over the bike and tighten nuts and bolts. They MIGHT listen to the valves and let it sit overnight and adjust them if they seem loose but 1000 miles is early for a valve adjustment on most bikes.

If you can do all of that yourself, why take it in? If you worry about a warranty issue-well as long as you have written maintenance records and receipts for oil/filters etc you have a case. But don't claim work was done that never was, because when an engine is malfunctioning somewhere down the line, we can tell when we open it up if the maintenance was performed when it should be just by the wear and tear

Unless it's a vrod, I remember there not being a valve adjustment. They have hydraulic self adjusting lifters.

If you don't have the 1000 mile service done, you may void the warranty.

My last new HD service was $220 for the initial service. I didn't have it done by an official dealer, but it was documented and done by a licensed mechanic. That's all it took, and my warranty was still valid.

Polarbear hit it right on the head. Follow his advice.

yes, I highly recommend that you always have the oil changed by a factory trained HD Technician
The biggest problem when owners change their own motor oil is they either add too much or not enough motor oil to the engine. Its imperative that the EXACT amount is in the engine, and you MUST use original HD Brand Motor Oil, The Engineers at HD have tested their own brand of motor oil to be specialty adapted to the HD engine.
Plus the HD Dealer will like you better if you have him do the service.

Thats what I did,... took it in for the first service and have been doing it ever since. Go buy the service manual...its worth every penny.
