ok my ex-husband went to court a few months ago to have child support lowered. he was denied and has to go back in april with proof of income. the first time he went to court i couldn't show up so i sent a letter to the judge to be put on record. i didn't get into trouble or anything because of it. now i got a piece of paper in the mail saying my ex has a pre-trial conference and has to bring in papers to show proof of income. do i have to appear even though i wasn't served by sherriff?

Depends on the rules of service of your unknown State.

In many States you can be legally served by mail, in others you can't.

Doesn't sound like this is a summons though in any event - just sounds like a notice to let you know the status of your case.
