If TMNT ends this year...

If the current TMNT series ends this year, where do you see the TMNT franchise in the future?

While the 4kids series managed to last 155 episodes and 7 seasons, it still fell short of the success and popularity of the original 80's cartoon with its 193 episode and 10 season run.

What will happen to the TMNT franchise from here? Would you like to see it take a rest for 5 years and then re-booted with a new cartoon with a different company?

Eh, Fast Foward stunk and Back to the Sewers is ho hum so I would welcome the end of TMNT for 6-10 years. The only TMNT series I enjoyed was the original and the 2003 revamp for about 20-25 episodes....

I have no problem with it ending it was my favorite show when it began but these last two seasons while still solid just have not been as good.

The sad thing is that while the show has lasted a long time with over 150 episodes it will be pretty much forgotten when it's over. That's kind of sad as this show deserves a place along the greats like batman TAS, Gargoyles and yeah Avatar. But it just never reached the popularity of those three dispite matching the quality IMHO.

I think it also had to do with it airing on 4kids.

If TMNT 2k3 debuted on KidsWB instead, it probably would have been more popular.

Yeah, this version of TMNT will be forgotten outside of the hardcore fans, but nothing can be done about it.

Another one? Ugh. I like the show, but no more spinoffs!

More of this, not:

Bad show with a terrible theme song compared to the 2003 series, or even Back To The Sewers.

You realize how difficult it is for any modern cartoon to reach 65 episodes let alone 155?

If a movie deal is finalized this year, expect to see another TMNT cartoon surface around the same time as the movie, or else it's still likely 4Kids, Playmates and Mirage will revamp the series in another 3-5 years. And given Mirages track record with remaining loyal to certain companies, 4kids isn't likely going anywhere.

All shows are pretty much forgotten soon after they end, only to be remembered by the fans of that show years later, the "popularity" of the current TMNT cartoon will be determined by the kids who have grown up with it over the past 5 years.

TMNT 2k3 probably could have piggybacked higher ratings with Yu-Gi-Oh! and Pokemon, but it would have never been as prominent on KidsWB and certainly wouldn't have lasted as long with as many episodes.

The only way to come close to simulating the type of hype the old show had would be for a TMNT show to appear on a cable network where it would be shown six days a week, two-three times a day.

That is true. However if the original cartoon could last 10 seasons and make almost 200 episodes, the new show fell short. The DCAU combined has about 400 episodes.

But that doesn't make sense to me. If 4kids cancels the show now, why would they want to re-boot it a few years later? I imagine Mirage would partner with a new cartoon company and have a new continuity.

Hell, we don't even know if 4kids will still be in business 5 years from now. They're probably going to go bankrupt.

Yet, that's not exactly true. Old shows like The Flintstones, Scooby Doo, Batman, etc. are still remembered decades later. If a show makes a powerful impact on society, it tends not to be forgotten.

Case in point whenever someone mentions Ninja Turtles, your average person is going to think of the old 80's cartoon series, not the new one.

While I'm hesitant to lump all the DCAU cartoons as a single show, the new cartoon failing to reach two hundred episodes doesn't really mean much to the franchise overall.

Because they see TMNT as an evergreen property, a property that's popular for awhile, quiets down, then renews itself, 4Kids is not just a cartoon company, they're also the main licensing company for TMNT merchandise.

Probably even greater incentive to relaunch a franchise that has made a couple billion dollars over the last 5 years.

Yes Old shows, that have been around in syndication for decades, shows that people grew up with, there are no gaurantees as to how any show will be popular once it's cancelled, but with 150 episodes, cable, the internet, dvds, ect... TMNT 2k3 has as good of a shot as of being remembered as any other show.

Certainly not kids today, unless you're talking about all the older fans that grew up with the old cartoon.

Well whatever the case 4kids is done for the time being as far as we know.

If we do get another cartoon a few years down the road, it'll likely be a new continuity and start things over again. Which I basically have mixed feelings about, as I'd rather see the current universe continued. There are still plenty of comics to draw stories from, but its not going to happen at this point.

I'm not sure if you could really consider the whole DCAU a whole series since I always thought it was more like different series that are set in the same universe. Besides that, I wouldn't say that 2k3 fails if, key word if, it doesn't go past the episode count of the original series. While it varies for different people, I always preferred quality over quanity when it comes to watching series.

Like Toon Out mentioned, TMNT is still a profitable property. The 80s series was popular and did well and while the 2k3 series hasn't been as popular, it still has done well enough from what I can tell. I wouldn't mind a new continuity, if they are ending the 2k3 series, as long as it is interesting.

While I'm not too familiar with how they're doing finanically right now, I haven't heard anything about 4Kids possibly going bankrupt anytime soon. So I really don't see how you could come to that conclusion.

You do have a point about how a show can be more rememberable if it has an impact on society. However, as Toon Out already mentioned, it really helps that those old shows were in syndication for years and those characters have become icons of the time. While there's no gaurantees on how a show will be remembered after it ends, with the different means of viewing shows nowadays, such as DVDs, TV, the Internet, and having over 150 episodes so far, there's a good shot that TMNT won't just fad away.

No offense, but I think that you're kind of generalizing people. I think that would apply more to the people who grew up with the 80's cartoon series. The kids who weren't born during the series' run would probably recognize the turtles from the new series or from the movies. In all honesty, before I watched the 2k3 series, I always thought of the live-action movies whenever I thouight of the Ninja Turtles.

I'm not so sure about that. I could see TMNT getting some more ratings, especially when the ratings for Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh! were in their prime, but I'm not sure if that would make it more popular. Other than Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh!, the only other shows from Kids' WB that I think gained a strong amount of popularity were The New Adventures of Batman and Superman, possibly Batman Beyond and Xiolian Showdown. Maybe you could argue the same for Jackie Chan Adventures, at least the early seasons, but just because something airs on Kids' WB doesn't really guaretee that it would be more popular.

As for the topic at hand, I'm still kind of skeptical about TMNT ending this year since I have yet to see a reliable and official source for that information. I personally don't consider fourms or a blog official unless the person is directly connected to the show, which has yet to be seen so far. If this does turn out to be true, I don't think I would mind that much either. I have enjoyed most of the episodes for Back To The Sewers, but I do agree that it doesn't capture the same feeling as the first five seasons of the series. In all honesty, as long as the series has a satisifying conclusion to the storyline, then I'll be happy with that.

As far as we know, the latest official information is that no new work on episodes has begun, and the show will end with the DTV movie, airing probably in the spring. As things stand now. Who knows what will happen in the future.

But what I think needs to be done, is that Back To the Sewers needs to end, the show taken off the air for a few years, and really develop TMNT to have a sort of 'legacy' feel to it. You can only reboot it so many times before you start to not be surprised any more.....you know?

Let the show rest for 5 years, bring it back with the TMNT being about 24 years old and their world being a bit different than we remember. It could focus on them reuniting to battle evil once more....

But I do not like the idea of another reboot. This version has so many story possibilities it's a shame to throw it all away.

I would also love to see the possibilities of it not airing on TV at ALL. Or at least not a first airing. Think of it. Total creative control, airing on a Hulu like site, or Direct to DVD Season Sets. It'd be the first of it's kind. No Networks, time schedule switches, or financial problems to worry about. It's all set in stone, and you know you'll get a garunteed set of episodes per season to flesh out a story :).

i doubt it will happen but i would push darker like the comic books really are.I mean things like batman and superman can push the limits with violence and still be huge why cant TNMT do the same thing

Yeah, this is what I was going to say. Let it end and allow people to miss it before restarting (or rebooting) it. If you keep it around just for the sake of keeping it around people are just going to get sick of it.

I think the show has run its course of any ideas that could entice or appeal to the older fan base. Back to the Sewers was its chance to return to the grittier feel of the early seasons, and the good material only slipped in sporadically between a so-so cyberworld plot. I can only see further seasons being even more diluted from the original TMNT concept. If following up on loose threads like the Rat King weren't a priority this year, I doubt they will be again.

Ideally, I'd like to see a few DTV projects ala the current DC and Marvel lines that cater specifically to the older crowd, with the sensibilities of the comics. But given that TMNT has a huge merchandise base geared towards young audiences, it's not very likely this will happen.

Personally, I wish just one more season could be produced.

I mean, sure, you can take a look and see that the franchise needs to take a rest, but look at the show itself. Back to the Sewers has set SO much up with just two more episodes left to finish it off in, and we got an episode summary a while back showing that the next episode is a filler.

That means we have one episode to get Splinter back to the physical plane, the three-way Utrom vs. Demon vs. Cyber Shredder showdown, explanations as to how Ch'rell and Saki appear, Serling getting sent back to 2105, and the big April/Casey wedding. I could see all of that being a two-parter, even a three-parter, but a SINGLE EPISODE? And, as I recall, Laird said that the DTV will be a separate story from BTTS.

I understand how long the series has lasted and that it deserves a break, I agree. What I DON'T agree with is ending a 155 episode series on a cliffhanger.

If the show does end, it probably took the writers themselves by surprise.

Revamping a show for only 13 episodes is pointless, the writers probably thought they would get at least 2 seasons out of the deal.

Sure, nothing is confirmed yet, but it does look likely that this is the final season.
