If the 'serpent' in the garden of eden was possesed by satan, should the 'snake' be punished?

given the accounts about the snake striking mans heel and so on, we can be sure they were talking about a snake. Did this snake have free will? Was the snake created perfect and good? If the snake (presumably innocent) had been possesed by satan, and it was all satans doing, why should the snake have been punished at all?
-The bible is very clear that the snake was punished -it lost its legs and had to crawl on its belly and eat dust, it will be an enemy of man, the snake shall strike mans heel and man shall strike its head

The snake was just a snake, it was not possessed by Satan, Satan used it as a puppet just like a ventriloquist does.
The snake was not punished at all, it had no idea what was going on

We should all be punished by 4 and twenty virgins between the ages of 18 and 27, then we should punish them...Zoot..wicked wicked Zoot!
