Yes the intake gasket can cause all the symptoms your describing. And it's a good thing your mechanic knew about this because it's frequently miss diagnosed as a head gasket. I believe there is an updated version of the intake manifold gasket which will supposedly fix the problem. I'm sure your mechanic knows to follow the torque sequence and torque specs. when installing it, as well as check the manifold with a straight edge to see if it's warped. Because if he fails to do so the gasket won't last long. The valve rattle your hearing is due to contamination in the oil, and if you continue to drive it like it is you'll cost your self allot more money due to bearing wear and wear to other expensive internal engine components. I'd also have your mechanic check for TSB"s and recalls regarding the manifold gaskets. Good luck and hope this helps.
