If the author dies, who do the profits go to?

I'm reading The Divine Comedy: Dante's Inferno, which was written several hundred years ago. Out of curiosity my friend asked me where does the money per each sale go now? I'm assuming that the profits go to the publishing company or something. Just to be sure, where will the profits go? And what if their are no living relatives left?

The more specific the better, and if you could include a link that would be greatly appreciated!
