would have traded Kazmir? Duquette came on as GM in mid-'03 and stuck around through '04. I'm not sure why they let a loser run their team, in place of a guy who made crappy trades, but at least had some success as Mets GM. Steve Phillips sounds kind of clueless all the time on ESPN, but I think ninety percent of baseball fans, even at that time, wouldn't have made the deal. He was regarded as high a prospect as Reyes and Wright in the early-2000's. The only good to come out of the trade is we may have not gotten Santana otherwise, because the Wilpon's may have been to pay him 23 million per year.

I think he was a great GM at drafting, like you said Reyes and Wright, but frankly he stunk it up when trading, again like the Kazmir trade....so I think he made a good move trading Kazmir because without that we never would have gotten Santana...(Kazmir would have gotten so much $$$ that we couldn't pay Santana
 
After the Mets won two wild cards in 1999 and 2000, most of his moves were "bonehead" moves. I heard him say that a prospect is only a prospect until he's performed at the major league level. Yes, I do think he would have made the move if he could have gotten a quality MLB starting pitcher.

Before they made the postseason, Steve was a good GM, but after 2000, he did virtually nothing for the Mets.
 
well trading kazmir was done because they would have saved money to get future refrences like johan santana. Steve Phillips was not a whiz at trading i should say but was indeed good at drafting. well maybe if he hadn't traded kazmir it would have not been a "bone head" mistake but they maybe would have never got players that thay have to day. this is coming from a yankees fan
