If someone has a very badly infected wound, what are some symptoms?

If someone had a wound on say their stomach area and it was infected, what would happen to them? What symptoms would they have? Would they pass out, etc.etc...

(This is NOT for any real life purposes by the way, this is for a story I am writing.)
The wound would be a large fairly deep knife wound, like a pocket knife wound or something.
 
I suppose it would depend on the size of the wound as well as how badly infected it was, a small cut that's badly infected would sting, whereas a large one would be agonizing, make you drowsy, ill, maybe even pass out if left untreated for a large amount of time, but we are of course talking BIG.
