If some historical events before 1970 never happened would things be different in

America(The U.S.)? Surely they would but how? like staying out of vietnam, or if the Cold War never happened, or Civil Rights movement... or maybe back into the 1700's but explain how would the world be different?
 
How about a basic one where the American Colonied did not beat the British, and King George decided to come down hard on us to help defray the cost of the war?

For beginners, there would be no American Civil War, since the true beginnings of the War Between the States had more to do with a state's rights vs. a strong Federal Government.

The effects in Europe would also be felt, since, the success of the American Revolution helped inspire the French Revolution, and others.
 
Change is inevitable. Social pressures demand change. A society which doesnt undergo change is stagnant and doomed to failure.

Vietnam was a Cold War response to the anti-colonial movement in Asia. America already fought to a stalemate in Korea. It went into Vietnam because the French defeat there was a vicious blow to capitalism, and NATO. The US sought to restore the Wests prestige, but got its butt kicked, too.

You cannot do the IF thing with history when it comes to events that changed the world. It is absurd and wishful.
 
You could make one single historical change and write a book speculating on how history would be different.
For instance, if there were no cold war, all the money that went into political standoffs and military hardware might have been put to use in education or feeding the poor.
 
Coltranes answer is ridiculous, NATO had nothing to do with Vietnam. Korea was a victory, we fought for the 38th Parallel and got it.


If you are going to speculate about history, just read Harry Turtledove. OR the What If series (written by more serious authors).

To go back to the revolution, if it had failed then Germany would have won WWI - why? because with no real rival (no french revolution to rise Napoleon) the empire would become stagnant and not keep up its imperial power. Germany would have beat the royal navy and took all of europe.
