There isn't a policy of the federal government owning companies. The ownership of GM and Chrysler is a result of bankruptcy. The federal government had loaned money to them to keep them solvent so that an orderly restructuring could take place instead of the collapse of the companies at this time last year when the economy was in free fall. In a bankruptcy a company's creditors end up owning the restructured company. There is no intention to own those companies long-term the way the UK and other european countries owned major industrial companies. The banks have largely repaid or bought-out the government loans and preferred stock purchases. Again, these steps were taken to stabilize the whole economy by preventing the collapse of important financial firms at a time when the financial system was in a panic. Remembering how bad things were from Sept 2008 through April 2009, what would you have done differently? How would that have made things better?
