Ford/USSteel/standard oil bot a shitload of those street cars around the country only to close them down to usher in the car

Try reading the thread where someone specifically mentioned NYC to LA and linking the entire USA with high speed trains.

I'm well aware of local light rail. I used it all the time back in the NW.
 
gov't basically fucked over the Railroads at the turn of the century and they never fucking recovered. you also have to have a lot of property to lay down the rail needed and the costs of that alone these days will prevent rail from ever really getting bigger
 
But not from a convenience standpoint. Trains could not compete with cars for short distances. That's why they died.
 
Without a transportation infrastructure at the destination we'd just be stuck renting a vehicle much like if we had taken a flight. To be worthwhile it'd have to be faster or much cheaper than the little secondary airport commuter flights.
 
Dont know about across the country but building a from boston to miami route, and similar west coast route makes sense.
 
Depends on the location and distance...commuter trains are popular all over this country because of bad highway traffic and parking in urban areas.

Also, local trains were between cities, not intracity.
 
Even if we did have trains like that, they would run just how Southwest does; no direct flights anywhere, going from one major hub to the next.

The idea of 13 hours from LA > NYC would be a bit off considering the stops and train changes.
 
HSR from SF to LA ain't gonna be $55 when everything is finished.

Whoever came up with that number just wanted to sell the project to the taxpayers.

Factor in all the cost overruns to build the thing, maintenance costs AND all the fat and lazy rail union workers who will want $100,000 a yr. + crazy lifetime benefits and the price per ticket will be mega high.

Look at how much BART workers earn.

Hell, we can't even build half a bridge across the SF bay without the thing being billions over budget.
