Exactly...they can estimate fares all they want but what will people actually have to pay once the project goes overbudget by many times, union labor gets involved, etc...meanwhile they ignore the true cost when you factor in subsidies.
 
too much freight track. they do have some high speed rail but there's too many track segments that aren't designed for it and the trains have to run at lower speeds.
 
I could see cost being a factor in coast-to-coast travel but connecting major metropolitan areas would be pretty smart, eg: San Francisco to L.A., Dallas to Austin, etc
 
How soon were you trying to book the ticket? The closer it is to departure the higher the ticket price FTL. Sometimes you can go down to Union Station and get them a bit cheaper then online.

the real reason it doesnt work in america is because we want to drive a big ass truck, or an expensive car, so people know how much money we have and bitches will wanna fuck us for it!!!!
 
if anything I think the eastern seaboard would be a good spot for high speed rail, but even the proposed rail from SF to LA covers a whole lot of low density areas
