If oil didn't exist, we'd have to invent it.

there have been resource wars before, but this time it will be world wide war using 21st century warfare technology. nuclear weapons will probably be off the table as to not spoil water resources, but that of course means a much bloodier and contracted conflict.

Let's see...
There's geothermal, tidal power, solar, wind, hydro, and kinetic are some that pop to mind.

Im not saying we are going to stop using oil right this second, Im saying it's time we seriously start focusing on putting our minds together and come up with something sustainable.
We're human beings. We got ourselves out into space, we can create an energy source that won't kill us.
To think otherwise is foolish.

As far as plastic go, there is already biodegradable plastics being made. No it's not going to be as cheap but *shrugs* We don't have much of a choice.

its not so much that we need to rethink oil addiction, its about rethinking the modern city.

Next time try actually fucking reading what I type, because you look like a fucking dumbass quoting me, and talking about something completely different.

I'm sorry, I must have been mistaken, I didn't think I was making an argument for different types of energy. Because, in case you didn't know, I am studying nuclear engineering. There is no better energy source per unit mass of fuel consumed.

Also, the ONLY one of the energy sources that you named that doesn't have SEVERE repercussions on the ecosystems they inhabit, is geothermal, and it's usage is spotty at best. There are VERY few places where it can be used effectively.

Back to my ACTUAL point. I was saying, there is NOTHING as readily available as oil to be used to make different types of products. Metals are scarce enough as it is, using paper makes liberal tree huggers cry, what else can we use that's not petroleum based? I honestly cannot think of one single material that wouldn't make liberals angry...
