If my phone's screen (Sony Ericsson w580i) keeps going multicoloured, could that be the

software? I have a Sony Ericsson w580i phone. Recently, the phone's screen keeps going multicoloured when I press the buttons and sometimes it blacks out too. Could it be the software on the phone? A friend has said it could be the ribbon that has come out of place too. Not really sure cos I don't know much about phones! Would be grateful for any answers because I'm not sure what to do with it.
