If my laptop came with a bluetooth icon shouldn't it work?

I have a phone and I want to transfer pictures from my phone to the computer..
How? D: whenever I try it says I fail.
I gotr a bluetooth adapter but i rread somewhere that doesn't work on laptops? wtf?
