I believe every state is different, but if you have kids, then there is a waiting period from the time you file for divorce until the court date. For example i think it's six months in the state of michigan.
If you are childless, the time limit isn't very long or non-existant, you just have to wait for a court date.
You do not have to go to marriage counseling -- no court can order that, it's an individual decision.
Sometimes Judges will order parenting classes, or other classes or counseling if one or the other of the parties getting a divorce has issues (such as anger), but i don't think it happens that often.
