If my 2004 ford focus has 2in tail pipe stock. What would 2 1/2 in do to it?

I mean would it increase horsepower or fuel mileage or anything like that?
I mean I just figured that since if you make the pipe a little bit bigger and maybe add a flowmaster. That it would help your motor breath out a little bit better. If you know what I mean. Cuz if you put just a little bit bigger pipe, more air would be able to flow through.
 
Theoretically, it would alter the back-pressure, and, without other things being altered, it might DECREASE performance, as engines are designed to operate at a certain amount of back pressure. 1/2 inch change probably won't do much, but depending on where you live, that IS considered altering an emission system, which technically is a Federal Offense.
