If lincoln had not become president would there have been a civil war?

Most of the crucial events that precipitated the American civil war took place in the time interval between Abraham lincoln's election in 1860 and his taking over office in 1861. These include the taking over the federal forts in southern states, looting of their armouries and the siege of fort Sumter. Perhaps if Lincoln had not stood for election, these things might not happened and the American civil war could have been avoided.
 
Yes. The South, led by South Carolina had been using succession as a threat since 1850. Lincoln WAS NOT "abolitionist". He was against slavery as an immoral wrong but he was NOT going to change the traditional slave holding states.

He was against allowing slavery in new states above the 36 30 line. Missouri (which at the time allowed slavery under the Missouri Compromise), Kansas and Nebraska. He was for allowing slavery to continue below the traditional Mason Dixon Line all the way to the Pacific.

However, before the elections, they again made threats that if people didn't vote Democratic Party in the election for the Presidency, they would succeed.

When Mr. Lincoln won the election, they began succeeding beginning with South Carolina. They were fighting FOR slavery in the above mentioned states.

Mr. Lincoln becoming President just hastened the situation. However, it had already reached crisis situation long before that. If the people had elected a Democrat into office, it would have only put off the civil war, not stopped it.
 
Do you know why the forts were there? There was a naval blockade to keep the cotton from going overseas, where it was fetching a higher price. The war was fought more over that than the issue of slavery. Lincoln freed the slaves (but not the slaves in states that didn't secede) as a political ploy to make it a moral war to keep Europe, specifically the British, from joining in to help the south. With all that, yeah, there was going to be a war, Lincoln or no. Lincoln's election was just a spark that ignited the powder keg that was all ready in the works.
 
In reality, many many things were swelling the tides of civil war long before the election of the nations' 16th President. Growing anti-slavery sentiment in America had more or less reached a crescendo around the time of this important national election. In fact, the war between the states was so much expected, that one Governer went as far as to build up his states militia..2 years before war was even a reality..in anticipation of a ' rebellion of the slave holders, which is sure to come'. America was deeply divided over the slavery issue and war would have insued with or without Abraham Lincoln. He was a crucial element in ensuring victory for the union and for freedom, without him however, the south would have found another excuse for the furtherance of slavery.

My state of Texas at 1st was not allowed into the union as we were a slave state It was not until the Brits tried to allie with us that they let us into the union
