Yes. The South, led by South Carolina had been using succession as a threat since 1850. Lincoln WAS NOT "abolitionist". He was against slavery as an immoral wrong but he was NOT going to change the traditional slave holding states.
He was against allowing slavery in new states above the 36 30 line. Missouri (which at the time allowed slavery under the Missouri Compromise), Kansas and Nebraska. He was for allowing slavery to continue below the traditional Mason Dixon Line all the way to the Pacific.
However, before the elections, they again made threats that if people didn't vote Democratic Party in the election for the Presidency, they would succeed.
When Mr. Lincoln won the election, they began succeeding beginning with South Carolina. They were fighting FOR slavery in the above mentioned states.
Mr. Lincoln becoming President just hastened the situation. However, it had already reached crisis situation long before that. If the people had elected a Democrat into office, it would have only put off the civil war, not stopped it.
