If I want to write for video games, what sort of degree should I get?

Like many other people, I have played video games for a majority of my life. Story driven games like Mass Effect are pretty much my obsession. The depth of the characters and the story just get me all a twitter.

The most I can do with computers is basic HTML. Would I have to learn programming to write for video games?

Any suggestions?
