If I update my iphone firmware from 3.1.2 to 4.0.1 will it undue my jailbreak?

Hi, I am looking to unjailbreak my iphone 3gs and was wondering if I updated the firmware would it unjailbreak my phone? Will this wreak my phone in any way? I just need to unjailbreak it, and this is seemingly the simplest way.
Suggestions and tips welcome, also please write them in a very easy to understand way. I'm great with PC but mac just doesnt make sense to me
