If I took in a cat from outdoors, would the Vet test him for Feline Leukemia

automatically? I took in a stray cat about a year and a half ago. After we took him in, we made sure to take him to the vet to get checked out, get his shots and everything. He had been getting sick this past week so we took him to a different vet yesterday. Turns out, he had feline leukemia, and probably had it since birth. Unfortunately, he had to be put down because he was simply too sick.

I was just curious, do vets check for this disease on visits or do you need to request that it be tested for it? It sounds like something the vet should look for, especially in a stray cat thats being taken indoors.

I am also wondering because I would like to get another cat, but I do not want this cat to be sick too. I've heard that cats at pet stores are often sick, is this true? Since most are cats found on the street--- are the tested for disease?
