Well, I don't know about Philistine, since that seems to insult the Philistines, but since gas is easy to buy, even if it looks as you describe, you have to assume the look is intentional - he/she may have actually cut up a cabinet with a chainsaw to get the look you see - perhaps as a commentary on kitchen work (if that type of cabinet) or the good old days or machine made cabinets. So e-mailing to ask if the artist threw something together and quit halfway though is pretty bad.
