if i get the MOTOROLA BACKFLIP phone can i then cancel my data plan?

the MOTOROLA BACKFLIP says it needs a $30/ month data plan. so if i buy the phone and pay the 1st month's bill can i then cancel the data plan and keep the phone? or is it a phone like the iphone where it always needs a data plan active? THANKS!! BEST ANSWER GETS 10 POINTS!!

my friend has the backflip and they required him to pay the $30 data plan for 2 years with his agreement

you can buy the phone but they will not let you downgrade your plan because they will tell you the data plan is necessary to receiving the full experience from your device. and even if they let you they just cut your existing contract and enter you into a new one minus the data plan and charge you for a cancellation of the old contract so it would probably be better if you just bought the phone at retail and maybe inserted your own sim card
