Was just wondering and in a down mood i guess. I have 3 kiRAB oldest is 14 and twins are 9. Well i brought them to the waterpark twice last week and they have some slides there and i love the slides and no one really knows how bad it is to have to sit and watch.

So anyway if i do fuse then does anyone know if i would ever be able to do these kind of things?
I know someone told me the jolt from roller coasters were bad but i dont care for them i am a chicken here scared of heights-LOL
But i love the water activities. Just wondering i know the doctor told me last time i was there 2 weeks ago i will never do things the same again.

Hi, I have a bad back also, but I am trying everything except surgery. I have talked to so many people who said don't do it! When they fuse the bones together, then you can't move the same way. It limits you. I suppose it helps the pain, but I don't know.

I would think long and hard before any surgery because once it's done you can't turn back, your stuck.

It's really difficult to answer your question. There are so many individual variances, like how old you are, your state of health, how many levels you might need to have fused, etc. I know a couple people in their 50s who do pretty much everything, including downhill skiing, water skiing, kayaking, etc. My surgeon swears the new instrumentation is strong enough to withstand just about any activity, like skydiving. I personally don't plan on testing him on that!!

personally I wouldnt.

if your fusion goes well and you engage in activities that stress your back you wont bother the fusion at all. what it will do is put more stress than normal on the other discs as they have to take up the slack so to speak.

this is how the "domino effect" works, your fusion puts more stress on the other discs. take it fairly easy and you should have no issues if the other discs are OK. beat on your back and the other discs will not like it and may possibly get damaged.

Hi

I was told 5 months ago my option is to have a 3 level fusion or live with the pain!!

Well i am doing the latter as my surgeon rekons i only have a 30% chance of being free of pain after my surgery and thats not good enough odRAB for me!

I was told i wouldnt be able to do certain things and would be limited in my suppleness through my back and my surgeon also warned that it puts pressure on my spine in other places.

Saying all that it is entirely up to the individual if they go ahead with a fusion.
For some it does work wonders!!

I am actually going in for a smaller surgery procedure just to alleviate my buttock pain.

I hope you find your answer soon:)

My daughter is just over three years post op a two level fusion with instrumentation. She is 19 now so I don't know if age has something to do with it. The past two years she has been snow and slalom water skiing, golfing, bowling... Her dr has her on no restrictions now - just listen to her body. She does use her head (and hears mom's voice) and doesn't do amusement parks. She sat out the strenuous attractions at Disney World. I don't remeraber if she went to our wave pool/water park last summer. She goes for another check by her pediatric ortho in two weeks and we'll see how things are doing, but she's in no pain. cas

Thanks for all the replys and sorry it took so long to get back but as i said i have 3 kiRAB and i dont get on here much. That is another reason i tell hubby i need a laptop.

For those of you that dont know i am 31 year old female in good health ( that i know of until i get results from IVP and Renal ultrasound) I had surgery in 2002 when he kept telling me everything looked fine. Well come to find out the fusion never healed causing the screws to break. So i wentt o shreveport which is in upper louisiana. I hate that it a teaching hospital and i saw a few different doctors.

But we agreed to go anterior/posterior, refuse and put new hardware and this time they fused 2 levels L-4 to S-1 instead of just L-5 S-1. And i guess just second guessing muself now i think cause i understad what zeroman means by putting the stress on other discs. Its just hard i guess. Thanks to all!!
