I used to have an electric guitar and an amp and it sounded very good so I would expect a distinct improvement. I'm not absolutely sure on this 'cos it's been a while but I would be careful about blowing your speakers. I've never done it personally but I know from other people's experience that speakers are not difficult to blow - shame if you have a nice system.
You can play your stereo through your amp when you get one though, that sounds awesome and you'll have to go a very long way before blowing an amp.
