If i change from a prepaid phone to a monthly phone on verizon can i keep my prepaid

plan? I currently have a prepaid verizon phone and my friend just gave me his phone but he was on a monthly contract plan. His phone only shows up on the monthly phone section of the verizon website so i was wondering if I'd have to change to a monthly plan if i switched phones
