If I buy a used Blackberry...?

if I but a USED blackberry off of a friend
or iPhone or Android
Can I do pre-paid card billing or have them automatically take it off by chequing account?
Or do I have to do a monthly data plan
I just cannot use a credit card to pay for it thats why and my friend has offered me an old blackberry

I LIVE IN CANADA so the phone company is telus or virgin mobile or bell not any others
