If I buy a phone from ATT that usually requires data plan, will I have to pay

for the data plan? (Read info)? My dad refuses to pay for the expensive data plan that comes with iphones, blackberries, palm pixis, ect. However, if I buy one of those type phones from Ebay and just put my SIM card into it, will I be able to use the phone without having to pay for the data plan? I realize I wouldn't have access to the internet and such but I just like the quality of those nice phones.

My dad is thinking the SIM card won't fit in the data plan phones because people may do this, but is that true? Has anyone tried this?
