If I adapt a screenplay from a novel, do I have to obtain legal rights from author

before registering it? I adapted one of my fave novels into a screenplay. If I want to register it with WGA and actually try to get it read by agents, etc., do I absolutely HAVE to get the rights from the author? Thanks.

yes you do! and acutally it's better to get the rights first so you can work with the author on the screenplay. I mean, if someone was to make a screenplay of your novels, you'd want to make sure they didn't mess anything up?
