If genes are passed on in tact how do we get mixed race?

I know that you have dominant genes so if one of your parents has brown eyes and the other has blue, your more likely to get brown eyes than blue - but its still usually one or the other. In biology I was taught that there is no merging of genes - genes are passed on in tact - one half from your mother's side, the other from your father's side. So how does mixed race come about. That seems to be like there's merging going on?
