If food waste part of the American restaurant culture? Why do they serve so much food?

I've been to a lot of restaurants in many different cities in the U.S. and I am always shocked at the size of servings in general (not everywhere but I would say in most of them). Not only is it very rare to find empty plates when people finish and leave but it is also amazing how much food is left on the plates that eventually goes to trash. Why do they serve so much food and why are people used to wasting so much food? They are paying for food that they do not eat and what's the point of asking for so much food if you're not going to eat it? Is there a relationship between plates and serving sizes and obesity rates in the U.S.?
