If Dumbledore was recast again, then ....

I prefer Michael Gambon, who plays him with more mischief. Richard Harris played him as VERY old and practically decrepit, which I don't think Dumbledore is in the books.

Hmmm, I think in the first two books he is made out like he's quite old. It's not until books 4 and 5 that Harry understanRAB why he was the only wizard Voldemort ever feared.

Agree with everything you have to say here.

But I still dont like Gambon as Dumbledore after 2 films, I dont believe he has that kindly look in his eye that Richard Harris had nor the Dumbledore that I imagine when reading the books.

Yeah he is a really good actor. Saw him in a film a while back. Can't remember the name. It was a good film and I really enjoyed it. But it was completely and utterly fictional....

Oh yeah, I remember. It was Braveheart!

Well, when I was young I was always confusing Richard Harris with Peter O'Toole, so I'd go with Peter. But I think he may be a little too frail to play him now. Perhaps Ian Holm instead.

Firmly agreed :) Does anyone else find him strangely attractive?

I don't think Michael Gambon is terrible - I doubt many people would blink at his portrayal if he'd been Dumbledore from the Philosopher's stone. However, having had Richard Harris in the role, it's difficult to accept such a change - especially one with what seems to be a Bristol accent.

I'd quite like to see Richard Attenborough in the role, or maybe Christopher Walken

James Cosmo would be excellent - 'old' but still a twinkle.

Gambon is awful, just awful in GoF. Aggressive and cold. There's no hint that he feels close to Harry at all. Harris played Dumbledore as too weak and feeble for my liking, but he did at least show some warmth.

I'm dreading what Gambon will do in HBP.

Gambon's Dumbledore has really grown on me.

Harris was perfect for the magical, fairytale atmosphere of the first 2 films but I'm not sure how well he would have fitted in the darker 2 most recent films. At first Gambon put me off but I've grown to like his sense of power and mischief. And worry...in GOF he was clearly concerned about what was going on throughout the film and he got this across very subtly.
