If arguing with atheists strengthens your faith, how does that work, exactly?

By explaining your beliefs to someone, you reaffirm them and reexamine them. It's like teaching math you just learned to another student - you find new ways to understand it. If, after arguing with an atheist, you still believe in your ways, it means you've found new ways to understand and believe in them.

For me, it's because having my faith challenged by those outside of it causes me to have to dig deeper. An atheist will bring up the problems and holes in my beliefs, forcing me to examine them and reevaluate them. If something doesn't make sense, I'm going to have to address that, and when I do, my faith is strengthened.

The religious person in question would have to believe that they've found a counterargument that satisfied the objection raised by the atheist.

Or, they would have to concede that the atheist had the better argument, and decide to believe anyway, in spite of the fact that there was a perfectly good reason not to believe.

Either way, there would be a strengthening of faith.

jonesdela - Ironic isn't it, that you just committed an ad hominem fallacy by saying "atheist usually use an ad homien fallacy which is Your stupid because you believe in God."

I don't argue with atheists. I simply point out to them how their ideas are flawed. Admittedly, in doing so I learn a lot about my faith. Take Zeitgeist for example. It's not the only bogus film to make the same claims, but it is in refuting the like that you prepare yourself "to provide a firm defense for the faith we hold".

It makes me see the other side of the coin and it streghtens that God does exist. atheist usually use an ad homien fallacy which is Your stupid because you believe in God.

cjac- I didn't commit an ad homien fallacy. To commit an ad homein fallacy, I would have to say that Atheist were stupid and dismiss the argument. He asked a question. I responded.
