...be so much news coverage? i don't think so. everyday thousands of people are killed, and their stories are hardly news items. In American hundreds of innocent people are sentenced to jail or sentenced to death, yet it is non-news. Some in America are exonerated by DNA evidence after spending 20 years in jail or 10 years on death row, yet again that is not a news story. In all such cases the person is black male or low income male.

Only because amanda is white female, there is so much coverage. I seriously doubt if Amanda was a non-white male, there would be any coverage at all.
also notice that there is much photo of amanda all over the news. Her black boyfriend from ivory coast is hardly mentioned in news. There is no news photo of him. When his trial was held in October 2008, the media did not even bother to report. Even when he was found guilty, it was hardly a news story.

I think Amanda has been held up as the poster girl of this case because she is intelligent, female and middle class.... the opposite of your usual "rape and murder" profile. I don't think that being black / minority / male would have made much difference on their own, but the fact that Amanda is pretty and comes from an affluent family, plus the fact the case has involved three nations has fired it into the media spotlight.

I agree with you though. Lots of people get killed abroad but rarely do you get so much news coverage. It's like Madeleine McCann, kids go missing all the time but her case has been unusually scrutinised in the media. I find it interesting that the UK and USA media have reported quite differently on the Knox / Kercher case and as a result there is a lot more sympathy and support in the USA for Amanda Knox.
