Those who are in favor of the reinstatement of the so-called "Assault Rifle Ban" apparently believe that it does.

All of the weapons which were banned during the Clinton era were only different from other legal weapons in cosmetic ways, not in firepower or potential lethality.

Fully automatic weapons have been heavily regulated for over 70 years, and nobody is pressing to repeal the law that made it so. Why would you want to ban a firearm simply because it "looks dangerous"?

Cato the Elder was a Roman statesman who saw Carthage as the greatest thret facing Rome. He ended every speech and correspondence, regardless of topic, with "Carthago Delenda Est", or "Carthage Must be Destroyed". I feel that Islam is the greatest threat facing Western Civilization in general and the US in particular, which is why I proudly call myself Islam Delenda Est.
michael: It worked alright. It took firearms out of the hands of responsible and law-abiding citizens because the guns looked scary. That's wonderful.

Waiting for the anti-gun idiots to get creative on this one. Anyone who believes there is such a thing as a semi-automatic assault weapon has the intellectual capacity of a 3 year old.

Not a single one who is for the AWB has any knowledge whatsoever about guns, or gun laws.

It's a "fancy" semi-automatic rifle is all that it is.

The Clinton assault rifle ban worked, as did his other crime-control measures. The NRA talks about reducing crime, liberal Democrat Bill Clinton actually did it.

These days, any Americans who see the name "Cato" recognize it only from the Cato Institute, a right-wing group that publicly pretends to be libertarian. The greatest threat facing Western Civilization in general and the U.S. in particular is right-wing extremism. Fortunately, the 2008 election, to borrow John Kerry's phrase, reduced you people to the level of a nuisance.

I agree with you about issues such as bayonet lugs and flash suppressors, however, extended magazines do indeed increase "firepower", which is why the military uses them. Now granted, pre-ban high-capacity magazines were legally sold during the ban, so none of this makes much sense.

A key point is that no such ban is being proposed - Obama said as much yesterday. However, focus will be directed at unscrupulous gun dealers and illegall weapons traffickers. As per the NRA - we'll start enforcing the existing laws...
 
How about putting a ban on the people who buy guns for the purpose of crime and murder. Do you think that might help in some way.

Criminals are going to buy guns no matter what.
All that banning guns will do is increase the size of the black market.
