If a VCR destroys a couple of tapes, can it ever be trusted again ?

My roommate has a TV set with a built -- in VCR and a built -- in DVD player . He tried to play a videotape in the VCR and it ruined the tape . He tried a second tape in the VCR, and it ruined THAT one . Now he's reluctant to give his VCR another try . I figure the two tapes he used were ready to be munched, and it might not happen again . Can we do anything to get the VCR ready to play tapes again ? Does the VCR need its heads cleaned ? Can we ever trust it again ? Thank you in advance for your answers .

I would buy a DVD/VCR combo as they are dirt cheap nowadays. Isnt not worth hoping your old VCR wont mess up any new tapes.

I would not trust it but you could try a cleaning tape to see if that fixes it. Just make sure you put a blank tape in next time you try it.

It can definitely be repaired. It's probably not a dirty head, but it's likely something that's not complicated and can be fixed rather quickly. If you were to take it to a shop today and they got right to it, you'd probably have it back working tomorrow.
There's no way I can say for sure what its problem is, but I've seen many many decks eat tapes, with nothing more than a broken belt. Those were 5 minute fixes if i was taking my sweet time.
