If a reporter wrote "Niggard" in a headline, would that be just as bad as?

"chink in the armor?" for example, if Kobe was being a ball hog, and a reporter wrote something along the lines of, "Kobe's Niggard performance," which means to be stingy, do you think it would cause an even greater uproar? It seems as if people are downplaying espn's "chink in the armor" headline
