would happen to them? For a school r.e projects im doing the Sharia law? What would happen if they did a petty theft and also is it punishable by death if they leave the islamic religion? Any other facts would be useful too x

Like in any other law system, the full facts would be taken into account.

For example was the shoplifting for much needed food for them or their kids? No punishment should be made in that case as the Islamic state should have ensured their basic needs were provided for - and they were desperate. Unlike the UK not so long ago when even if you took a slice of bread you were deported to Australia.

However if the shoplifting was for greed - eg the latest ipod, and if its a conintuing problem, then this must be stopped for the sake of the wider society. The Islamic punishment would be chopping the hand - however I stress that this is on the basis that the theif is 100% guilty and that he/she lives in a full Islamic state where they are totally aware that this is the punishment for what they did.

My understanding is that in over 1200 years of the Islamic caliphate, this punishment was only enacted on a few occassions.

Sharia law is not proposed to deal with things like shopfliting or other petty crimes. Those will remain the purview of UK law. Sharia law will only be used if both parties agree, in settling marital and other interpersonal disagreements, but still under the overriding jurisdiction of standard law.

Penalties for renouncing Islam, or blasphemy, etc, will still be restricted as they are now, that will not change.
