If a house, business, etc. is closed for some reason, what happens to mail sent...

...to that address? I just read a news story online about an apartment complex that was closed by the city, and the tenants all had to move out. That got me wondering what would happen to the people's mail after they left. Would mail still be delivered there? If not, would it be returned to the sender? It seems to me that those tenants wouldn't necessarily be able to forward their mail (the story said some had to move into a motel), so how would they get their mail? I'm just curious to know if anyone actually knows what would happen to the mail in a situation like that.
 
Mail would be forwarded......if possible.......returned to sender if requested........the rest destroyed as undeliverable........
