If a jewelry store was robbed, police would investigate and probably figure out if the owner was in on it. As for insurance, if jewelry was stolen and their insurance policy covers theft, then if the investigation proves robbery, yes insurance would pay the claim, up to the policy limit minus the deductible.
Insurance companies can and do hire their own investigators to check into these types of claims. If the claim is fraudulent, and the insurance company can prove it, not only can they deny the claim, but they can sue on grounds of fraud and breach of contract and get back the money spent investigating the claim.
It's in the best interest of the policyholder that a claim is investigated to speed the claim payment process. Also, it is the insurance company's duty to investigate.
