IDET success anyone? please! :)

I have two annular tears in the luraber discs. Very painful! My insurance denied the IDET procedure, reccommended after I had the discogram. I have read a few posts and it makes me sad to hear that it has possibly been as helpful as it should have been, I cannot live w/the pain anymore (my workmans comp denied my injury...I'm a physical therapist). And, if you have had the IDET, are you fully functional now?

Then, my pain medicicine md though it was psychosomatic and my physiatrist does not agree w/ the discogram's result. come on people. why would I make this pain up?

Someone else mentioned laser fusion? has anyone had that and been pain free?

Years ago the thought was that IDET would be "all the rage" and would be the next best cure. But long term results were not as promising as they had hoped. At one time in the mid to late 90's Workers' Comp companies were pushing for IDET. Right now they are not fond of it....which leaRAB to the thought that it didn't turn out to have long range positive results. From what I've read it has short term benefits but hasn't been proven to be a long term solution.

Insurance companies are hesitant to approve procedures that they don't see as the right treatment and/or don't see the "return on investment". That is, money spent on IDET may not be resulting in patient improvement. Thus patients may end up undergoing other treatments or in the case of Workers' Comp it may not be resulting in patients returning to work.

What was the reason for the denial of coverage for the IDET? Is this WC or your own insurance?
 
I have read this post before with another question. hmmm. Do you know people who have failed at the IDET? I have heard the PLDD is a good option.
What do you think of that procedure?

No, I am worse, as my pain is generated trough multiple sources. PLDD helped 10-15% pain.
 
IDET will not help your annular tear. You have chance of around 30-40% it will help. More after, IDET can cause more damage then relief.

For annular tears you have few options:
1. PLDD
2. Nucleoplasty coblation
3. SED with dr. Yeung.

Please have in mind - discogenic low back pain caused by annular tears, in other worRAB caused by chemical irritation of sinu-vertebral nerve is HARDEST thing to solve when it considers spine.

PLDD is one of best non-invasive solutions for you. According to some studies, success rate for discogenic-low back pain (caused by tear) is around 80%.

You would take 40% success rate of IDET, but would you take big possibility of IDET damaging your healthy tissue and end-plates?
 
I had an idet in 1998 it helped for around 2 years and got me back to work however it is not a long term solution. It never releived my pain completely and now I am 2.5 weeks post fusion as my condition worsened. I would recomend idet for the short run but I would expect further complications at least that is how it worked for me. I am really sorry for your pain and wish I had answers for all the people who go through this. I wish people who say it is all in your head could experience this pain for a day. Then maybe they would be more understanding. GL to you I hope you find the releif you seek. Al
 
I guess this is how you reply- My pain is constant, It is never ending, burning. The discogram did not produce pain that did not exist, it produced it at a higher extent and showed annular tears with no disc protrusion (small possible bulge). I am not excited to receive an invasive surgery that causes scar tissue and can result in the same 40% success rate. Again, I am not having radiating pain, just on the right side from an SI issue, not on the left side where it burns and causes constant/relentless pain. I am a physical therapist and have seen so many surgical back cases that have caused worse pain and there is no going back after fusion. @ least w/ the IDET if it doesn't work, then you can have another procedure done.

Have you had an IDET? How did the PLDD fair for you? are you completely pain free and recovered? inquiring minRAB want to know fast :)
