Idea For an App...

So I'm sitting here staring at two Series 60 phones that have a.) internal cameras and b.) WiFi (n80 and n93), and I got to thinking. Video calling in the U.S. isn't a possibility because no network supports it... but what about an app that allowed video calling over wifi?

I'm not a programmer, and no nothing about the complexity of programming for Symbian, but anyone else think this would be cool? As more and more phones have both wifi and a second camera, it'd be a great service to offer, something like skype but for video calling.

Anyway, just a thought...

That's a nifty idea. I don't see why not. I think it would have to be specific though, like one wifi s60 user to another wifi s60 user. Or if it could be connected to Yahoo, Skype, or MSN messenger and just have that be used as the webcam, that'd be nifty too.

A lot of people don't like video calling though, from what I've heard. That's why it hasn't really taken off in Europe or Asia. Nonetheless, I'd use it!

It'd be a bit of a novelty for me, not sure I'd use it a lot, but even if it was just one s60 phone to another, it'd be cool... especially since it'd be free. I just want to have some use for the damned second camera, lol.

Its only function ive seen is the initial oohs and ahhs it gets when co workers or buddies see it...I usually show them the little vga camera on my n73 and say "this is the camera on your phone " then flip it around and show them the whopping 3.2 and say "this is my camera"..i wish nokia would exclude them as its obviously years away from taking off and becoming mainstream. They seem to be so obsessed with it as the e61 actually supports video calls wi without the camera

I don't think it's before it's time, I think the idea isn't ever going to launch at all. If you talk to some of the Euro or Asian users, the idea never really got all that popular. Nonetheless, Nokia seems bent on making these phones with a front camera more than any other company. In fact, I can't think of another name that does front cameras anywhere near as streamline as Nokia.

I've done that to my friends too. The ooos and ahhhs are priceless.

fyi, Mobiola Webcam is soon to be ported over to s60v3 (I'm a tester). it allows you to use your phone as a webcam via bluetooth. Not exactly the same thing, but pretty neat anyways.

BTWebCamera can do that already, the bad thing about BTWebCamera is that it doesn't support USB cable. Some users (including myself) want to use phone as webcam via USB because it has a faster speed than BT.
