I'd like to start exercising and getting in shape, what's the best way to start?

I will be joining a gym this week and with all the equipment, and little idea as to what exactly I'm doing, I'm a little overwhelmed as to where to start. I definitely need to get my stamina up and I'd like to improve my overall health. I don't really have a weight problem, just a little extra chub I'd like to tone. :) I'll be leaving for the National Guard soon, so I'd like to gain a little muscle too. I'd really like to get in shape, but I need help starting out. Please and thank you.
