id like to buy my husband a bicycle as a gift. he is in his fifties, but fairly fit. ?

he will be riding on roads and also dirt trails. I will spend up to 400 dollars. Can you please advise me what make or model to consider. Thank you. We live in california.
 
It's always nice if a gift could be a surprise, but he needs to go with you to help pick out the one he wants. Proper fit is very important for cycling. If makes riding much more enjoyable and less prone to injuries.

Take him down to your local bike shop (or visit several different shops and decide on which one you feel more comfortable with). They will have a selection of road bikes, hybrids, cruisers, etc.

All the major brands mentioned in the previous posts are of comparable quality, it's mostly a matter of preference.
 
go to the nearest specialized bike dealer and tell them how much you want to spend and they will set you up. be sure and get a helmet. an authorized dealer will take good care of you and will sell you the best product for your money.also they wil give you knowledgeable and proffesional answers to your questions. and they will size you to your bike. SPECIALIZED is my prefference in bicycles.
