an eye test? The letter was passed onto Trevor Horton DVLA Swansea. I put forward that all motorists should have an eye test every two years; and if they need to wear glasses, then it should be stamped on their drivers license. But he wrote back to say: motorists can test themselves; that is, if they can see a car number plate at 20.5 meters they are fine to drive. And he goes on to say:

"There has been limited evidence specifically linking defective eyesight to road traffic accident, and therefore no justification for additional measures such as mandatory regular eyesight tests. You may be assured though that the position will be reviewed as new information arises."

What do you make of this, after all I understand over in America it is law to have eye tests every two years if you drive on the road. So why not in UK. Surely it would prevent road accidents?

Why don't you "do gooders " back off, there is far to much regulation in this country without people like you who have nothing better to do than create more legelation for motorist who are strangled with laws at present,go and hide your face .

I think your right, that that should happen, but would the DVLA be bothered with having to issue out new licenses with eyesight stamps on it? i think not! lol
BTW before i started driving, i got my eyes tested :)

When you take you drivers test, you are already checked (at least it was when I took my test). However, one's who wear glasses it is specified on their license. They ask you if you wear contacts if you have no glasses on. You have to specify why you wear your glasses whether it be for reading or just driving or just every day life.

You never know when you get into a accident. It can happen at anytime. A blind spot is just that alone. I almost got into a accident one time. I looked to my right and seen no car, I began to go over and there was a car and they beeped their horn. He just happened to be in my blind spot. I understand your concerns. Too many accidents happen daily and some are fatal. We all need to be more alert and stay off the cell phones. I hate to see people on their cell phones. They are so careless.

So I feel they should review your request and make it mandatory to have a exam when you go to re-new your license. Upon expiration dates, they should set up some type of testing. Good luck on your quest.

I assume he is right.

If not, why not collect data on accidents and the eyesight of the drivers involved and whether they were using lenses glasses etc?

This will show whether your case is correct and allow you to progress it further if you wish, as you will have evidence to back it up.
