I work in a REALLY hostile work environment, what should I do?

Okay, so this is my first job ever. I am in college, so I kind of really need the job so I can have spending money and money for books.

I am working at a Bally Total Fitness and things are crazy there. I just got transferred to this location, because there were the same problems at the other one. The customers there are extremely hostile and mean. On a weekly basis my manger needs to call the police to take someone out of the facility for now following the rules. The people who go there do not listen to me at all. When I tell them about a rule they will cuss me out and tell me they aren't going to listen to me. Some of the other staff have been assaulted while telling customers that they need to follow the rules. It is just a really hostile work environment. We have asked our general manager to post the rules at the entrance to the facility and to hand out leaflets with the rules and he said he would, but he hasn't. Our general manager is really flake-y.
I dread going into work every day, the customers are just so hostile and mean. Some of the customers demand that I go and get them a glass of water when that is no where in my job description. They order me around and threaten me. Last week we had to have a guy arrested because he pulled down his pants and started masturbating in the middle of the facility. But this stuff happens on a regular basis. On monday I was closing down the facility and there is this customer who always insists that the clocks are fast, so he wouldn't leave. We called the police, but in the mean time he started flipping over our computers.

I just don't get it. These people pay like $20 a month to come in and they expect world class service and for the staff to be at their beckoned call. It's just really insane. And I worked at another location and people were the same way. One of my other employees said it is the calibre of the people coming in. They are mostly poor immigrants, but some of the people who are obviously Americans do the same crap.

I really need the job, though. I have no work experience and if I quit this job it will take me some time to find another job and then I will get a bad reference.

What should I do?

If your manager is ignoring the health and safety of the club's employee's and the other customers then his boss needs to know about it. Call or email corporate and let them know exactly what's going on. Tell them you fear for your safety and the safety of the customers that follow the rules; maybe review the rules and put yourself in the shoes of the customer, does one or two rules seem a little silly?

If they don't do anything then you need to find a different job.

Honey, it is 2009. People leave jobs like water flowing over Niagara Falls. Just move on. Life is too short to work on a job you hate.
Get your certification to become a personal trainer and work your own hours. Throw in a little nutritional course and you're ready to soar!

Start looking for another job. Tell them about why you want to quit. You do not need your current job for a reference.

You can get one from a (high school) teacher, voluntary work, neighbor you mowed the lawn for (for example). Just try to be creative and focus on your good qualities, so it does not really matters who is Your reference. When you get the new job, quit this crappy job :)
