...reverse? When I started the truck it sounded like something was loose and hitting another part. Then I went to put it in drive and the truck would not go forward or reverse.
It will shift but it doesn't feel like it is catching a gear. No jerk when shifting in gear like normal.
 
Is the shifter just kind of flopping around, or does it feel like it's locking into gear?

If it's flopping, it might be just a pivot, cable, or a linkage - a relatively easy fix.
If it's engaging, then you might be looking at some major repairs.
