I was looking for a new job, but circumstances have changed.?

I was fed up with the social environment at my current job. I went out to dinner with a former co-worker and he suggested I apply to his company. I submitted my resume, did a few phone interviews, and gave them a desired salary that would be a significant raise. Very recently the situation at my job has changed dramatically, as in a few people were walked out. Now the other company wants me to come in for a formal interview. I have a very unique skill set and after talking with the new company I am 99% sure the interview will include an offer. However my faith in current company has been restored. New job at my requested salary would pay 10% more. But I have over 6 years with my current company and the commute is much shorter. I want to stay where I am, not string along my friend's company, but get paid more as well. How do I pull that off. Right now I am compelled to call my manager and let him know the situation.

Don't say a thing until the other company makes an offer period. Then if they do, tell them you need a couple of days to think about the offer. At that time, you discuss with your manager of the offer and amount they are willing to pay you to work for them. Most likely your manager will match their offer to keep you, but if not, you know exactly how they value you.

There is a mind set that most people will change jobs w/in a couple of years for more money. But after 5 years, you get set in your ways, the company ways and can feel comfortable. Plus many people can get a little bit scared starting over with a new company vs being set in your old.

But there is one other thing to consider that was told to me from a recruiter years ago. He stated that most companies will match another companies offer to retain the employee, but;;;;now that you have looked and found another job, they now know you are disloyal to the company and many times the employer will quietly look to replace you with someone else and let you go in the future, since now they have the time to look while you are working vs you leaving and then they have to scramble to employ someone else.

Employers all the time will have prospective employees think about an offer before accepting. With you having 6 years at your current employer would expect this and also expect that there is a possible expectation that your current might match it. It is better to not accept the offer, vs taking it and then 6 months later try and go back to the old.

good luck either way
